Marriage & Couples Counseling

“I admire couples who pursue counseling.

There are times in any relationship where additional support and guidance

can make all the difference, and your willingness to engage

in that process is a powerful step.”

– Lawrence Lovell, LMHC

The Moment is Here

Every relationship hits moments where the two of you feel more like roommates than partners. Maybe the arguments repeat themselves. Maybe the silence after them says even more. Maybe you are both trying, but nothing seems to land the way it used to.

You are not failing at your relationship. You are facing something that almost every long term couple faces, and it is solvable with the right support.

What Can We Do

We guide and support couples move from disconnection back to partnership. We do not believe taking sides or assigning blame is our purpose in couples work.

Our role is to help both of you understand what is actually happening beneath the surface, so you can build something more honest and more resilient than what you hada before.

Our team includes Black male, Black female, and Hispanic/Latina therapists who bring both clinical expertise and cultural understanding to every session.

Michelle:
Michelle Lovelle is an MSW graduate student level therapist with a warm, person-centered approach that helps clients turn their struggles into strengths. She specializes in anxiety, relationship issues, and anger, and as a Black female therapist, she brings both professional training and lived perspective to every session.

Megan:
Megan Torres is an MFT graduate student level therapist who uses practical, solution-focused tools to help clients build confidence and create lasting change. She specializes in anxiety, relationship issues, and generational trauma, and as a Latina therapist, she understands firsthand how culture and background shape the experiences clients bring into the room.

Therapist & Founder

Hello, I’m Lawrence Lovell, the founder of Breakthrough Solutions and a licensed mental health counselor with over 10 years of private practice experience. I work with adults across New York and South Carolina, providing individual and couples counseling as well as training services. I specialize in helping clients work through relationship issues, anger, and anxiety, including the difficult histories that often underlie them. As a husband and father of two, I understand that life is rarely simple, and I don’t approach it like it is.

I chose to focus on these areas because they’re challenges that touch nearly everyone at some point, yet so many people never get the support they need to work through them. As a Black male therapist, I also understand how important it can be to work with someone who feels relatable and who genuinely understands your experience. I strongly believe that we all do better in every area of life when we have real guidance and support behind us. That’s what I’m here to provide.

I earned my Bachelor’s in Business Management and Economics and a Master’s in Human Resource Management from Stony Brook University, and my Master’s in Mental Health Counseling from Touro College.

Lawrence has been an incredible support to me in both individual counseling and in couples counseling with my wife. He’s an exceptional listener—patient, present, and genuinely attentive—and he responds in a thoughtful way that feels grounded in real experience. You can tell his perspective is informed by working with a deep and diverse range of clients, and he draws from that breadth without ever making the sessions feel generic. He creates a steady, respectful space where we I can be honest, communicate more clearly, and keep making progress. I’m truly grateful for his guidance and would highly recommend him to anyone looking for a skilled, compassionate therapist.

When I started working with Lawrence-I was hoping to strengthen my communication and stay true to my core values. Very quickly, I realized that Lawrence is a master at his craft—and I don’t say that lightly. As we work through both personal and professional topics, his insights are consistently spot-on. He listens deeply, validates my experiences, and helps me navigate challenges with greater confidence. I leave each session feeling clearer, and better able to lead from a place of strength. I consider myself grateful and fortunate to be working with him.

Lawrence was engaged at Henry Schein to conduct a webinar series on mental health. He was thoughtful, thorough, and engaging! Throughout the series he broached many tough topics in such a professional and meaningful way. He captivated audiences throughout the organization! His series garnered the highest viewership at that time. I would definitely engage Lawrence for future workplace mental health workshops! He truly understands how to message appropriately in corporate settings.

Lawrence has been nothing short of a lifesaver. From the very first session, it was clear that we were in the hands of a compassionate and highly skilled professional. He created a safe, non-judgmental space where both of us felt heard, respected, and understood. His insights and guidance have been instrumental in helping us navigate through some of our most challenging moments, and he equipped us with practical tools and strategies to improve our communication and strengthen our relationship. What sets him apart is his ability to truly understand the unique dynamics of our marriage. Lawrence doesn’t just provide cookie-cutter advice, he really digs deep to address the root of our issues. The progress we've made together feels authentic and sustainable. We are grateful for the transformation that has taken place in our marriage and can’t recommend Lawrence enough for anyone seeking to enhance their bond and find continued happiness together. He is a true gem in the world of therapy!

I must say I was very resistant to the idea of couples and individual counseling. That I have committed to the process. I have seen such great results within myself. I want to thank Breakthrough Solutions and personally thank Lawrence.

Unaddressed Issues

Left unaddressed, disconnection tends to deepen rather than resolve on its own. Couples who do this work often describe the opposite outcome: more honesty, more ease, and a renewed sense that they are on the same team again.

Regardless of Where You Are

Whether you are engaged, newly married, or have been together for decades, marriage counseling is not a sign that something is broken. It is a sign that you are both still willing to fight for what you are building.

Couples

  • Let’s discuss how to communicate with your partner effectively.
  • Let’s develop an approach to problem solve through issues together.
  • Let’s put together a format to game plan for next month, next year, and on.
  • Let’s get to a place where you can love on each other during the tough times.

What can you expect from your therapist?

Sometimes, the benefits of therapy may seem vague. Today, we want to share with you five qualities that we believe every therapist should have so you can better understand how therapy is designed to help you. In therapy sessions, our aim is to support and guide you using these qualities.

Genuine Empathy

A therapist should be able to empathize with you effectively and make you feel heard and understood.

Nuanced Perspective

A therapist should provide perspective that you either did not have or that you should consider putting more weight on.

Empowering Education

A therapist should be able to educate you in subjects that you were not aware of.

Effective Tools

A therapist should be able to help you develop approaches to use in difficult situations. They should also help you feel confident that you can employ these tools when needed.

Mindful Awareness

A therapist should be able to guide you towards improving your awareness. That awareness should help you to make better decisions when you are facing a challenge.

The wellness team here at Breakthrough Solutions makes an effort to use these qualities in each of our sessions with our clients.

How Long Will This Take?

Did you know:
  • Short term therapy is often considered completing between 6 to 20 sessions.
  • Research on evidence-based psychotherapy consistently supports that effective therapy typically involves a minimum number of sessions to ensure meaningful change

Can you do less than 6 to 20 sessions?

Completing fewer than 6 to 20 therapy sessions can significantly reduce the likelihood of achieving meaningful and lasting mental health improvements. Sessions below this threshold may lead to incomplete treatment, before you can fully engage in intervention techniques or develop resilience. Consequently, this shortened therapy duration can result in temporary relief without addressing core issues, leaving you vulnerable to relapse or the re-emergence of symptoms.

How often should you connect with your therapist?

Weekly or biweekly sessions are ideal for maintaining momentum and ensuring steady progress. This frequency helps keep the work fresh and actionable, enabling us to address challenges in real-time. On the other hand, waiting 3 weeks or longer between sessions often disrupts the flow of progress and reduces the overall effectiveness of the work we do together.

Do you know how many sessions you need to reach your therapy goals?

In short-term therapy, working through both the surface and underlying issues within a 6–20 session window allows you an opportunity to develop sustainable strategies for handling your concerns more effectively in the long term.

(If needed, long-term therapy, which can last a year or more and may explore deeper, lifelong patterns and issues.)

What does your therapist want?

Your therapist does not have a goal to prolong therapy sessions. Our goal as a practice is to get you to your therapy goals as efficiently as we can while staying true to our core values.
